The Road to Enlightenment: Curated Exhibition

The “Road to enlightenment” is a sculpture which the British artist Marc Quinn came up with. The statue found at Montreal Museum of fine arts is attractive from the appearance, and it implicates a sense of calm and peace (Berger 19). The road to enlightenment was in the series called “Sphinx” by Marc Quinn. It talks about human spirits in which “you live and then die” and “God is within (Quinn 18).” Quinn made portraits from bronze representing people who are given birth to without limbs.

He made other paintings appear in a twisted style that resembles yoga postures. Furthermore, Quinn named each sculpture by giving them titles of the Roman or Greek goddess. The statues made by Mr. Quinn have a helmet hair with a facial expression and explores the idealized figure of a person with no flesh or blood.  Quinn also says, “Human beings often create images, begin to worship them and then forget they initially invented the images (20).” The road to enlightenment is, therefore, a posture of attraction and beauty in religion.

The United Nations- China Monument: Temple of Heaven is the work of an artist called Wenda Gu. The United Nations- China monument was originally found in the permanent collection of Hong Kong museum of art. However, the current location is located at the PS1 contemporary art center in the New York (Bessire 36). It contains three dimensions which were made by white curtains. The white curtains are sewn with human hair to make English, Arabic, pseudo-Chinese, English- Chinese and Hindi letters. The words written are more readable when someone is at a far distance, but when moving close, they become nonsensical. The canopy and the surrounding walls are utilized to make by defining the three-dimensional area of installation. The installation makes a home that has no boundaries as implicated by the hairs of the wall which exhibits the space from being exterior or exterior.

The middle of the installation contains a contemplating setting known as Ming Dynasty. The area includes twelve lamp chairs, some spring tools and to tables. The seat of each chair has a video monitor that depicts images in the sky (38). Gu refers pictures of the sky as video film in heaven because they indicate peace and harmony. Wires found inside the monitors stay exposed in clear cases. The music plays from a Chinese musical instrument called Bianzhong. The bianzhong contains bronze bells which play in the background of the music. United Nations- China monument, the temple of heaven is attractive because of its beauty. It appears bright and a cool place to bring peace among people or even worship. The place is appropriate for unifying people through urging them to speak a common language. The place, therefore, is beautiful and right for promoting peace in individuals and among the nations.

TV Buddha was the work of the artist called Nam June Paik. Paik was the pioneer in video installation during the 1960s, and he collaborated with his fellow artists such as George Maciunas (Nourbakhsch 23). Wooden Maitreya first made the TV Buddha in 1976, referred to us Buddha of the future. In 1996 John Kaldor, the friend to Paik made Kaldor candle. Kaldor candle and TV Buddha apply conceptual utilization of video. The employ of the video was developed first by Paik in which the monitor and a camera were used. Paik’s knowledge about the television enabled him to come up with an artistic utilization of video. Paik said, “I think I understand time better than the video artist who came from painting-sculpture. Music is the manipulation of time. All music forms have different structures and build up. As painters understand abstract space, I understand abstract time (25).” Paik therefore, trained to comprehend how the segments of the video work.

The sculptor of the Video Buddha staring at his image on the television screen shows the religious meditation. The Buddha before the monitor illustrates the importance of spiritual contemplation although he looks disturbed and admires to look away (Hicks 14). However, Paik changed the theme of religion by replacing the Buddha before a computer monitor and removed the television one. The change was meant to make a connection through telephone receiver rather than through contemplation. In this case, a telephone receiver is quicker regarding communicating the message as compared to meditation. The computer also shows images at the same time it gives the sound.

“Insult to injury” by Jake and Dinos Chapman is a series of works released on the 1st of May till 29th of June. The artists purchased one of the sets of disasters of war prints. The war prints were originally from Goya Foundation during the year 1937 (Jones 42).  The group of eighty images in the attack of horrors became a representation of gross insanity for conflict.  Chapman meticulously corrected the Goya prints of war by doing away with some of the set prints. Dinos said, “We always had the intention of ‘rectifying’ it… So we’ve gone very systematically through the entire 80 etchings, and changed all the visible victims’ heads (45).” the 80 images made art of moral voice was not a good idea. Artists cartooned the faces of people by making them look like those of puppies. The insult to injury system is an evil way of treating individuals. The reworked series of art is, therefore, not suitable for the disaster war prints.

The artist Giulia Marchi talks about the project “call her Fatimah- Muslim.” Fatimah is at the intersection of religion, ethnicity, and gender. Her photography reflects women Muslim living in China. In China, there are some people challenging individuals who have a wrong perception of a woman about religion from Western culture. Marchi says, “Many young Muslim students move from their country to Egypt to learn about Islam (Brooks 8).” He also says that “They are Muslim — but they do not know much about this religion. Once in Egypt, they discover it through the study of Arabic, the Koran, and through life in Cairo (9).” According to the statement, female Muslims are not considered significant when it comes to matters concerning their religion. However, it does not fare to treat people to a certain degree because of their gender. People are equal before God, and both women and men deserve same rights to know and follow their religion.
